We aren’t the ones for shortcuts. Come with us as we take you along the road, for the journey is as breathtaking as the destination itself. It begins months, sometimes a full year in advance. No path is the same, no pace equal. Yet one thing remains constant, our fascination for our muses, the Indian crafts.
Inspiration
For anyone with an eye for detail and an understanding of aesthetics, it is difficult not to fall in love with the many crafts of India. These traditional techniques bring warmth and color, add value and intricacy to every place they occupy. It is thus in them lies our everlasting source of inspiration. The first step is to understand these complex, layered textile practices to the best of our abilities, and that step begins with a visit. Yet another journey within a journey. It is imperative that we first experience the place and the people who are the custodians of these textile traditions. In knowing them is knowing the essence of the craft.
Ideation
Developing on our experience, we build our understanding. Dive deeper into the technique, gain insights into the process, unpack its historic and current positioning, observe humane stories associated with it. Only by gaining these comprehensive insights, we begin ideating. Over time and meditation, we explore and experiment with the multiple possibilities that the craft presents. Find newer, unexplored ways of bringing it into fruition.
Translation
The next step is translation. Literal and figurative. We take the textile technique beyond its original boundaries, create an interpretation, and translate it for the current audiences. To make this shift without losing the authenticity of the craft and while being sensitive to the age-old practice is a towering task. Small but immensely impactful shifts lead the way as we find ourselves talking in a newer dialect. While the language of the craft remains the same, the words start varying.
Collaboration
On making the artisans comfortable with the shift we then begin the fun part! Over workshops and ideation sessions we explore the technique with our artisan partners. In these experiments we come together to find newer ways of working, stumble upon pleasant accidents, create beautiful compositions. Every voice and idea finds place as we truly incorporate values of co-creating.
Execution
After multiple collaborative workshops we finalize our designs, which are then converted into easily understandable variations. Our artisan partners then work from their homes on receiving these. They spent an incredible amount of time getting it all just right, creating the textile artworks with all their heart, ensuring that the cumulative vision of everyone involved is processed impeccably. In their sincere and wholehearted effort lies the promise of our incomparable quality. On receiving these creations back we perform the finishing processes to ensure our pieces are in perfect order for their receivers.
